TVS Electronics was set up in 1986 and reports revenues of about US$500 million. It designs, manufactures and distributes dot matrix printers, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, printer supplies, mice, keyboards, mobiles, and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). It also provides design, manufacturing and service support for telephone and ICT companies.

Solution: TVSE’s roadmap to transformation with AWS cloud

TVSE now needed to transform its backend systems. There were myriad issues that needed attention. For one, an aging ERP environment that had reached the end of support. Two, handling two data centers (DCs) – the production DC in Chennai, India and a secondary one in Bangalore, India that served as a disaster recovery (DR) site. And three, a slew of software from different vendors with versioning issues and tie-ins.

“We had multiple issues to be resolved, but needed one partner to handle it all,” the CTO says. “We opted for Cloud Kinetics. They proved their reputation for quality and delivery.”

Corporate reputation is vital. The parent, TVS Group, founded way back in 1911, now has 60,000 employees and a group turnover of US$9 billion. “Apart from our legacy products, where we continue to be market leaders, we have also added a range of services covering the entire spectrum of after-sales service and e-waste management,” the website states. “With our century-old legacy of quality, trust, and expertise in developing cutting-edge tech products and services, we are poised to deliver need-of-the-hour solutions that span geographies and categories.”

The Cloud Kinetics team set to work, starting with a detailed design of which apps needed to be migrated, in which sequence, and when. Since TVSE’s core apps were running on SAP on Windows 2003, Cloud Kinetics migrated SAP instances to SUSE Linux on AWS cloud. TVSE was also running a customer relationship management (CRM) application developed through another software vendor. The Cloud Kinetics team helped with infra provisioning and architecture review to ensure zero downtime and seamless integration.  To address the client’s need for continuous uptime and expert support, Cloud Kinetics also implemented 24/7 AWS managed services.

Outcomes: Robust returns with a move to AWS Cloud

“TVSE has been our customer since late 2014,” the Cloud Kinetics team, says. “We were delighted that TVSE could realize about 40% return on efficiency. Either TVSE’s team or vendors previously managed apps. We provided the infra support during the region migration and OS re-platform projects on the AWS cloud.”

Migrating to the AWS cloud was a default decision, given that AWS is architected to be a very flexible and secure cloud computing environment. AWS supports 90 security standards and compliance certifications, and all 117 AWS services that store customer data offer the ability to encrypt that data.

With 24/7 AWS managed services for the infrastructure translated to ongoing monitoring, proactive maintenance and rapid issue resolution, minimizing downtime and maximizing application availability.

An additional benefit of this re-platforming? More efficient e-waste management. Under the 2016 E-Waste Management Rules, a Producer Responsibility Organization (PRP) collects and channels e-waste generated from end-of-life electronics products to ensure environmentally sound management and disposal. TVSE is a PRO and has set up collection centres across India. It also raises awareness about e-waste through the media and training programs.

“Our technical expertise extends to re-configuring old equipment, refurbishing it, and making it as good as new. This reconditioning process enables the device to be re-used by the customer or business without compromising on the user experience,” TVSE says. “Our corporate buyback program is designed for companies to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) as well as provide ROI. The program also reduces the cost of purchasing new equipment for companies and consumers.”

One company at the nexus of airport facilities management was Angkasa Pura Supports (APS). Set up in 2012, APS is a PT Angkasa Pura I (Persero) subsidiary and provides comprehensive and integrated airport facility management services that uphold international standards. It supports 15 major airports throughout eastern Indonesia and offers similar services for commercial and public properties.

“Through its system supply, services and tools, APS offers the best services for passengers or airport visitors in Indonesia,” said Indra S Mara, APS’s Vice President for ICT. “APS has more than 14.000 employees with relevant certification and operates in 21 service points throughout Indonesian cities. Our vision was to become a world-class company with integrated IT-based services in the aviation industry.”

The challenge: Agility to match business growth

Since 2014, APS has been a member of the ISSA (International Sanitary Supply Association). In 2015, APS expanded its services from middle Indonesia to include East Indonesia through 21 service points.

“After three years and on-premise management, we realized we lacked the agility when it came to business initiatives,” said Roy Liston, APS’s Infrastructure and Business Support Manager. “A stable connectivity was vital for us to be able to deploy scalable infrastructure for web-based applications, at the same time catering to peak period demand while reducing costs and increasing security.”

APS sought an MSP (managed services partner) to help them with logistics coordination, execution and controlling costs. After going through a dozen presentations by various vendors, the company settled on the GCP (Google Cloud Platform), Google BigQuery for analytics, and UI (Unified Analytics) dashboards for real-time actionable management. Who would implement this? Google’s prime solution partner, Cloud Kinetics.

The solution: Migration to GCP with proactive monitoring

“We needed a GCP partner who could develop an organized plan that best suited our business. Not only that, we needed a partner that knew to make sure migration was smooth and could help us fully utilize the service offered by GCP,” Roy Liston said. “We chose Cloud Kinetics because they’re a premier partner of GCP and a certified company specializing in GCP infrastructure and migration. We needed a business and technology partner who could integrate backend services seamlessly on the cloud without disrupting our ongoing ICT functions. Sandy Kosasih, Chief Corporate Officer at Cloud Kinetics, points out how they implemented up-to-date migration practices and the best cloud architecture designs to achieve efficiency, resilience and scalability. “This helped seamlessly migrate nearly 100 workloads,” he said. “APS can now leverage on Google BigQuery Services, designed to make data more productive, agile, elastic and compatible with Google Cloud. APS was able to make data available in real-time while running complex analysis queries in seconds and scaling seamlessly by taking advantage of on-demand pricing.”

Stefhanie Sendjaya, Cloud Kinetics Account Manager for APS, said that Cloud Kinetics “also rolled out security managed services through 24/7 proactive monitoring and reporting. This assisted APS in dealing with external attacks and keeping the customer environment more secure.”

The Cloud Kinetics team proposed a scalable solution running on GCP for infra provisioning, app monitoring, network availability, and security incidents tracking and mitigation. GCP had the three core services – IaaS (infrastructure as a service), PaaS (platform as a service), and serverless computing environment.

Cloud Kinetics provided 24/7 support for maintenance and proactive monitoring necessary for operations and analytics and security layers for continuous improvement. The benefits were remarkable.

The outcome: Lower capital & maintenance costs & 50% faster processes

“We managed to significantly lower our up-front capital costs and successfully reduced 25 per cent of monthly maintenance costs, thanks to Cloud Kinetics,” Indra S Mara said. “The time to set up, configure and implement was just one month. There has also been a great improvement in customer data analytics, with external users benefiting from 50 per cent faster processes and a wider range of insights on the data gathered throughout.”
