When Topebox launched their innovative blockchain game My DeFi Pet and saw overnight success, it became clear that a traditional on-premise setup wouldn’t be enough to handle the growing traffic and deliver the cracking user experience their company was known for.

With the global video games market poised to achieve a growth rate of 9.1% (CAGR) between 2022 and 2028, the online gaming industry has been buzzing. Topebox nailed the winning formula early on in the gaming world, with successes like Pocket Army, Sky Dancer: Free Falling, King Rival, Titan Hunters, Guns And Dungeons. But My DeFi Pet, which used blockchain technology, presented a challenge unlike before. The non-fungible token (NFT) game exploded in popularity globally, with its daily active users increasing five times within weeks of its launch.

Challenge: Balancing game popularity & performance

Ensuring a top-notch user experience and game performance has always been a priority at Topebox. As the company scaled its user base and employee headcount, they needed to better prepare for the next generation of gamers, who looked for more connections, greater identity freedom as well as increased control over their data and assets.

With users joining from countries as far apart as Brazil and the Philippines, an on-premise server could no longer deliver optimal performance for this volume of geographically distributed traffic.

Solution: The key is in the cloud, Google Cloud!

Topebox’s performance and growth requirements were best served by moving to the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) with Cloud Kinetics’ support. And Topebox was delighted by how quick and seamless it was – the company experienced nearly no downtime during the migration to GCP and the entire exercise took just a few hours!

Outcomes: Transforming the user experience with GCP

How Topebox Won The Blockchain Game With Google Cloud

The wins of moving to the cloud were evident in more ways than one.

1. Data insights to drive cost optimization & performance

GCP also offered a data warehouse, which Topebox was able to leverage with Cloud Kinetics’ help, gaining detailed player insights and analytics as a service.

“Cloud Kinetics brought a ton of experience and a team that knew which services were required and when,” the Topebox team added. “We realized huge benefits from the relationship. The game’s performance jumped by 80 percent. The remaining 20 percent benefit was cost optimization and beefing up backend ops. We couldn’t have done this ourselves.”

2. Low latency & smooth peak usage performance

  • At peak usage, Topebox has clocked 100k DAU and 20k CCU, and runs smoothly at these levels without any trouble.
  • The game loading time was reduced from 3 minutes to 15 seconds thanks to Cloud CDN.
  • The server response is in low latency (3-5ms).

3. Scalability & reliability

The ability to scale and the reliability in seconds help reduce costs for maintenance. These ensure that the gaming company doesn’t miss any opportunities in the market, as it is able to quickly pivot, scale, and adapt. Using Cloud CDN, Cloud Storage, and Cloud Loadbalancing helped deploy new game versions globally in seconds with no downtime during upgrades. The backend uses GKE, ComputeEngine, with easy scale up/down ability, while the database uses Cloud Firestore, which also scales globally and has strong user-based security.

Moving to Google Cloud helped us deliver the best experience for our users. The speed of game loading and the smoothness of user interaction in-game are all incredible now. Cloud Kinetics was able to help reduce cost, support investigating incidents, and assist with choosing the appropriate technologies and implementations to ensure a seamless experience. Nam Nguyen, CTO, Topebox

The future: Partnering for growth

Topebox sees Google Cloud, with its open cloud solution and ease of use, playing a very important role in their infrastructure. And with the market growing only bigger, the gaming company recognizes the importance of having the right partner to deploy these solutions.

“We’re exploring many other services of the GCP Ecosystem, and we think those will help us with the big titles we have planned in the near future as we scale up globally. We are considering Cloud Spanner and the ML for our AI and Bot in-game,” Nam Nguyen says. Cloud Kinetics sees this partnership growing only stronger as they support Topebox in uncovering new opportunities and building a new generation of online games.

The year 2018 saw the start of the airline sector boom in Indonesia. From January 2018, Indonesia’s Transportation Ministry allowed the opening of 83 new flight routes for commercial civil flights, consisting of 58 domestic routes and 25 international routes. This not only opened up huge demand and opportunities, but also challenges to handle the increased capacity requirements to handle the boom.

One company at the nexus of airport facilities management was Angkasa Pura Supports (APS). Set up in 2012, APS is a PT Angkasa Pura I (Persero) subsidiary and provides comprehensive and integrated airport facility management services that uphold international standards. It supports 15 major airports throughout eastern Indonesia and offers similar services for commercial and public properties.

“Through its system supply, services and tools, APS offers the best services for passengers or airport visitors in Indonesia,” said Indra S Mara, APS’s Vice President for ICT. “APS has more than 14.000 employees with relevant certification and operates in 21 service points throughout Indonesian cities. Our vision was to become a world-class company with integrated IT-based services in the aviation industry.”

The challenge: Agility to match business growth

Since 2014, APS has been a member of the ISSA (International Sanitary Supply Association). In 2015, APS expanded its services from middle Indonesia to include East Indonesia through 21 service points.

“After three years and on-premise management, we realized we lacked the agility when it came to business initiatives,” said Roy Liston, APS’s Infrastructure and Business Support Manager. “A stable connectivity was vital for us to be able to deploy scalable infrastructure for web-based applications, at the same time catering to peak period demand while reducing costs and increasing security.”

APS sought an MSP (managed services partner) to help them with logistics coordination, execution and controlling costs. After going through a dozen presentations by various vendors, the company settled on the GCP (Google Cloud Platform), Google BigQuery for analytics, and UI (Unified Analytics) dashboards for real-time actionable management. Who would implement this? Google’s prime solution partner, Cloud Kinetics.

The solution: Migration to GCP with proactive monitoring

“We needed a GCP partner who could develop an organized plan that best suited our business. Not only that, we needed a partner that knew to make sure migration was smooth and could help us fully utilize the service offered by GCP,” Roy Liston said. “We chose Cloud Kinetics because they’re a premier partner of GCP and a certified company specializing in GCP infrastructure and migration. We needed a business and technology partner who could integrate backend services seamlessly on the cloud without disrupting our ongoing ICT functions. It was a tall order, but Cloud Kinetics ticked all the boxes.”

Sandy Kosasih, Chief Corporate Officer at Cloud Kinetics, points out how they implemented up-to-date migration practices and the best cloud architecture designs to achieve efficiency, resilience and scalability. “This helped seamlessly migrate nearly 100 workloads,” he said. “APS can now leverage on Google BigQuery Services, designed to make data more productive, agile, elastic and compatible with Google Cloud. APS was able to make data available in real-time while running complex analysis queries in seconds and scaling seamlessly by taking advantage of on-demand pricing.”

Stefhanie Sendjaya, Cloud Kinetics Account Manager for APS, said that Cloud Kinetics “also rolled out security managed services through 24/7 proactive monitoring and reporting. This assisted APS in dealing with external attacks and keeping the customer environment more secure.”

The Cloud Kinetics team proposed a scalable solution running on GCP for infra provisioning, app monitoring, network availability, and security incidents tracking and mitigation. GCP had the three core services – IaaS (infrastructure as a service), PaaS (platform as a service), and serverless computing environment.

Cloud Kinetics provided 24/7 support for maintenance and proactive monitoring necessary for operations and analytics and security layers for continuous improvement. The benefits were remarkable.

The outcome: Lower capital & maintenance costs & 50% faster processes

“We managed to significantly lower our up-front capital costs and successfully reduced 25 per cent of monthly maintenance costs, thanks to Cloud Kinetics,” Indra S Mara said. “The time to set up, configure and implement was just one month. There has also been a great improvement in customer data analytics, with external users benefiting from 50 per cent faster processes and a wider range of insights on the data gathered throughout.”

“Cloud Kinetics is the top-tier MSP (managed services provider) on the GCP and an enterprise integration partner on VMware, NetApp, Dhruva, Cohesity, ServiceNow,” said Ted A, Cloud Kinetics’ Chief Revenue Officer. “Cloud Kinetics has operations in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Europe, and the US to help companies migrate to a hybrid cloud.”

Indonesia is becoming a hot spot for global tech companies keen to get into one of Asia’s fastest-growing data markets, Nikkei Asia reported on July 8, 2020. It’s where e-commerce and food delivery services are rapidly expanding due to the pandemic.

The trend toward data localization is also drawing the tech titans to the world’s fourth most populous country. “Indonesia is full of opportunity,” Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google parent Alphabet, said during Google Cloud’s virtual launching ceremony in Jakarta on June 24, 2021. “It is one of Southeast Asia’s most creative, dynamic, and entrepreneurial countries with more than 150 million Internet users.”

To avert pandemic-driven pandemonium, Indonesia needed to efficiently and rapidly vaccinate a significant portion of its 270 million citizens, many residing on its 17,000 islands. This logistical undertaking was immense, but cloud-based IT managed services could help mitigate the technical difficulties.

“Vaksinku” is a national project to vaccinate Indonesians across the archipelago. In June 2021, the World Bank approved a loan of US$500 million to expand Indonesia’s efforts to respond to the pandemic, strengthen the preparedness of its health system, and support the government’s free vaccination program. Tne company that has been at the forefront of the vaccination project is PT Jasuindo Tiga Perkasa. Set up in 1991, the company has won a bouquet of awards, including Asia 200 Best under a Billion in 2011 and 2012 by Forbes Asia and the Top 50 Best-Performing Indonesian Companies by Forbes Indonesia in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2018.

Jasuindo was set up in 1991 and provides security solutions for documents, holograms, and payment and security cards. It also offers commercial printing solutions. MasterCard and Visa have certified Jasuindo for embedding the security chip in their credit cards. In 2013, the company’s joint venture entity began offering electronic embedding technology for passports in Indonesia and other ASEAN countries.

Scaling to a million transactions

“Our app served around 800,000 active users with more than a million transactions that a trusted partner needed to manage,” said Samantha Wijaya, General Manager of Jasuindo’s Vaksinku project. “We wanted a stable managed environment to deploy a scalable infrastructure for web-based apps while catering to peak period demand and reducing costs simultaneously.”

Jasuindo sought an MSP (managed services partner) to also help them with logistics coordination, timely execution and keeping costs under control. After going through a dozen presentations by various vendors, the company settled on the GCP (Google Cloud Platform), MySQL database on cloud, Google BigQuery for analytics, and UI (Unified Analytics) dashboards for real-time actionable management. Who would implement this? Google’s prime solution partner, Cloud Kinetics (CK).

We wanted a robust solution that could keep in step with our growth aspirations. We were rapidly diversifying into new products and markets. We needed a business and technology partner who could integrate backend services seamlessly on the cloud without disrupting our ongoing ICT functions. It was a tall order, but Cloud Kinetics ticked all the boxes. Samantha Wijaya, General Manager, Jasuindo Vaksinku

The CK team proposed a scalable solution running on GCP for infra provisioning, apps monitoring, network availability, and security incidents tracking and mitigation. GCP had the three core services – IaaS (infrastructure as a service), PaaS (platform as a service), and serverless computing environment.

The Google Operations Suite (previously called Stackdriver) is a systems management service that provides performance and diagnostics data for monitoring, logging, tracing, error reporting, and alerting. Stackdriver is a multi-cloud solution and was ideal for Jasuindo’s needs.

“CK is the top-tier MSP (managed services provider) on the GCP and an enterprise integration partner on VMware, NetApp, Dhruva, Cohesity, ServiceNow,” said Ted A, CK’s Chief Revenue Officer. “CK has operations in Singapore, Malaysia, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Europe, and the US to help companies migrate to a hybrid cloud.”

Smart and responsive solution with managed services

CK provided 24/7 support for maintenance and proactive monitoring necessary for Jasuindo’s distributed operations and analytics and security layers for continuous improvement. Its proprietary Arcus Smart Cloud Management platform provided automated Terraform templates to deploy “infra as a code” and a single pane of glass for integrated monitoring and management.

The benefits were remarkable. Jasuindo saw a 20% drop in monthly IT operation costs due to application streamlining.

“CK partners with our clients to navigate the complex landscape of cloud transformation and make strategic IT decisions,” Ted said. “The CK team is ready to build digital roadmaps and deployments with clients from cloud migration to cloud-managed services, from app modernization to data analytics.”

The seamless integration of software helped our teams collaborate and coordinate logistics with demand. We could also consolidate and monitor all operations from a single view with Cloud Kinetics’ assurance and committed 99.9% availability. CIO, Jasuindo

If the pandemic has proved anything, it is the importance of rapid adaptability in the face of uncertainty. Every company has learned that digital is critical for business success. Jasuindo understood this tenet and worked closely with CK to enable access across the massively spread-out Indonesian archipelago.

“The solutions worked like a charm,” the CIO added. “It was well integrated with production. We could scale it with multiple BUs in due course. We were glad that Cloud Kinetics provided systems operations and support as well. Cloud Kinetics also aligned it to our IT governance and service delivery model for seamless integration.”

It’s not every day that an elementary school on the outskirts of a capital city decides to move all its workloads to the cloud. Cloud Kinetics has been privileged to be chosen to help in this unique educational endeavour at a unique school in Indonesia.

Unique because the institution, Marie Joseph School was only founded on January 10, 2004. In just two years, its popularity and prestige rose so rapidly that junior and senior high school wings had to be also started.

“Our motto is to enable students to be intelligent, creative, independent, and virtuous,” Ms Carestha Widjaja, Chairwoman of Yayasan Amal dan Kurban Jakarta, said. “With the spread of Covid-19, the school had to rapidly evolve to adapt to new learning methods by innovative use of technology.”

The pandemic forced classes to go online, and thousands of students had to log in to their school system every day. Therefore, the school needed not only fast response times but also a layer of security and high reliability. They also required services to be scaled on demand to adapt to the rapidly rising demand from students.

We needed a secure, reliable, fail-proof platform. We opted for GCP (Google Cloud Platform) and the Moodle LMS (Learning Management System), which is widely used in universities and schools. Moodle is modular and can be adapted to any type of online learning. We decided to partner with Cloud Kinetics to help us manage the migration. Principal, Marie Joseph School

CK set up a secure, high-speed infrastructure on GCP and optimized the school’s apps, workloads and processes on the cloud. The critical issue was to keep everything secure and on budget. CK provided managed services and support with a robust WAF (Web Application Firewall), with added security and identity-based access. All traffic between public-facing web apps and private networks were securely monitored and managed according to set policies. This helped the school achieve 99.9% uptime.

We built a high-speed, powerful infrastructure that could scale up to meet the rising demands while keeping costs under control. We helped host their applications, their database files, workloads, tools, web content, backups, and static files. Ted A, Chief Revenue Officer, Cloud Kinetics

Why Moodle?

Moodle is an open-source LMS ideal for blended learning, distance education, flipped classrooms and other e-learning projects in schools, universities, workplaces, etc. It has customizable management features and can be used to create private websites with online courses for educators to achieve learning goals.

Why GCP?

Because GCP is a suite of cloud services that run on the same platform that Google uses internally for products such as Google Search, Gmail, Google Drive, and YouTube. GCP provides a set of management tools and modular cloud services, including computing, storage, analytics and machine learning.

“It is one of the most creative, dynamic, entrepreneurial countries in Southeast Asia with more than 150 million Internet users.”

Indonesia’s education system is the fourth largest globally, with more than 50 million students, 3 million teachers and 300,000 schools. Primary to high school level education is compulsory. Primary and middle school education is complimentary, while students are charged a small fee in high school. In 2018, for example, the enrolment rate for primary school was 93.5%, and for middle school, it was 78.84%.
